1. Get safe
The most important thing is making sure you get yourself safe. Call 999 for emergency and medical services. You can also call 101 for advice if it’s not an emergency.
2. If possible, exchange details
If you’re involved in an accident with another road user you should get their name, address and registration plate (if a vehicle). You’re also obliged to share your details too.
Doing this will make things loads easier down the line.
3. Photos and witnesses
It’s sometimes easy to forget in the heat of the moment. But making sure you capture as much as you can will help your future self.
Reach out to potential witnesses too. By collecting their details they’ll be able to give their account of what happened.
You might find that the other party involved in the incident will try to get you to apologise. The best thing to do is not admit any responsibility or agree to any financial compensation in person. This could make things tricky. Leave it your insurer.
4. Notify your employer
Let your employer know what’s happened. Depending on who you work for they might be able to assist you directly.
5. Report to the police
This is important. Particularly if you haven’t exchanged contact details. You should report the incident to police within 24 hours of the accident.
6. Claim with your insurer
Contact your insurer as soon as you can. If you’re insured with your employer they’ll be able to assist with this. The insurer will ask you for some details about the incident and what was damaged.
From there they’ll process your claim and you can begin getting yourself back on track.
At Laka, we cover everything from your bikes and gear, to your mind and body. We also provide legal assistance for making a claim for an accident that wasn’t your fault.
