Racing the Traka: Europe’s Top Gravel Cycling Event in Girona
The Traka is undoubtedly the biggest gravel race in Europe, and it takes place in the cyclist’s paradise of Girona, Spain. Known for its stunning terrain and world-class cycling culture, Girona provides the perfect backdrop for what many consider to be the best gravel race in the world. As I prepared for the 100km challenge, I knew having the right cover was crucial – that’s why I always trust Laka to have my back on adventures like these.
Why the Traka Is a Must-Ride Gravel Race
Three years ago, I experienced the thrill of the Traka 360km for the first time - and I’ve been hooked ever since. In 2024, I returned to take on the 100km race (more my distance) and came away with a podium spot. Hungry for more, I returned again this year to challenge myself and once more chase a top spot in the 100km event.
If you’ve ever ridden gravel in Girona, you’ll know just how spectacular it is. Tough climbs, breathtaking views, and smooth, fast-rolling gravel make this region a dream for off-road cyclists. I arrived in Spain a few days early to fine-tune my equipment and scout the course - a decision that proved crucial on race day. Before hitting the start line, I made sure I was fully covered with Laka Complete, which includes protection against damage and theft during sportives like the Traka.
A Week-Long Gravel Festival in Spain
During Traka week, Girona transforms into a hub of energy, hosting multiple events ranging from 100km to 550km. The atmosphere is electric - pro riders, weekend warriors, and cycling fans fill the streets and trails. Watching everyone push their limits gave me the motivation I needed heading into the race.
Race Day: Mud, Rain, and Mayhem on the Trails
I had prepped for dry, dusty trails, but race day had other plans. As I ate my overnight oats and peeked through the shutters, I was met with heavy rain – a familiar feeling for a UK-based rider like me, and one I hoped could play to my advantage.
The 100km Traka course packed in about 1,400 meters of climbing, most of it in the first 30km. The neutral zone ended just before the first climb, and with over 1,000 riders around me, the start was sketchy. I stayed upright and made it into the climb ready for the chaos to unfold.
Battling the Elements and the Elevation
The front group broke apart fast. I dug deep to stay with them through the first climb, but on the steeper second section, I slipped off the back. The rain intensified, transforming the trails into rivers. My cyclocross background gave me some hope, but visibility was nearly zero, and safety became my top priority on the descent.
By the time I hit the second big climb, I was starting to overtake riders who’d been dropped. I went hard, knowing the next 50km were flatter and offered a chance to recover. Still, I couldn't bridge the gap to the lead group of five. I chose to wait for the second group of 30 riders to conserve energy.
The Final Push and a Hard-Earned Top 10 Finish
Working as a group, we covered the flat section quickly. But with 25km to go, the climbing returned – short, steep, and savage. One climb in particular felt like a wall. Alistair Brownlee launched a brutal attack, and I managed to follow with two others. From there, it was mostly descending – technical and slick due to the rain.
Unfortunately, Alistair crashed on a descent, leaving three of us. We pushed hard, knowing a large group was chasing. The final sting came in the form of a 1.5km climb where one rider broke free. I dropped the last competitor with 1km to go and crossed the line in 7th place. Not quite the podium of last year, but a result I’m still incredibly proud of.
Why I Trust Laka for Bike Insurance
After a race like this – wet, wild, and full of risk – I’m reminded why I never ride or race without Laka bike insurance. Crashes, mechanicals, and bad luck can strike at any moment. With Laka, I insure not only my bike but all of my cycling equipment and accessories too.
Here’s why I insure my bike with Laka:
- Cover during Sportives – I can focus on the journey ahead rather than worrying about my bike.
- Flexible monthly policies— No year-long contracts.
- Collective-based claims — Fewer claims = lower monthly costs.
- Zero excess fees on bike claims — You get back on the road faster.
- Responsive, friendly team — They’ve always made my claims smooth and stress-free.
- Pause or upgrade coverage — Perfect for seasonal riders or racers.
Seeing several crashes during the Traka was a harsh reminder of how unpredictable racing can be. Thankfully, everyone was okay, but I've got peace of mind knowing Laka has my back.
Final Thoughts on the Traka Gravel Race
The Traka 100km is one of the most demanding yet rewarding races on the European gravel calendar. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a dedicated amateur, this race tests your endurance, skill, and mental toughness. Rain or shine, Girona never disappoints – and neither does the Traka.
If you're thinking of taking on one of the best gravel races in Europe, add the Traka to your list. And if you’re heading into the unknown – like steep climbs, muddy trails, or unpredictable weather – make sure you're backed by insurance that understands what cyclists need. For me, that’s Laka.
